Christopher Plummer's interview on BBC Breakfast on Jan. 14, 2008 has just been added to You Tube.

"PARNASSUS is still on."
Doctorparnassus.com - The official site for the film has been launched, though there is not much there yet.
Smart.co.uk/dreams/ - "The producers of The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus have been in touch with Dreams. ... Since Heath Ledger's death, the producers have kept quiet, but now they have told Dreams that shooting of Dr Parnassus will recommence very soon."
Quickstopentertainment.com - "Quick Stop was contacted by a source within the production of Terry Gilliam's upcoming The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and they wanted to clarify the status of the film. ... The source within the production wanted to make certain the word gets out that the production is not in fact shut down but is moving forward and will feature Heath Ledger in his last role."
AICN - The Fate Of Gilliam's DOCTOR PARNASSUS... "This matches word from our own folks, who tell us that PARNASSUS is still "on". Clearly Ledger's death has thrown a whopping wrench into the works, but I'm told that current plans allow for material already shot by Ledger to be retained...and for the remainder of his appearance to be recast."

January 28, 2008
People.com - Show Will Go On for Heath's Last Movie, Says Costar - Christopher Plummer talks about Terry Gilliam's efforts to salvage The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

AICN discusses rumors about how Terry Gilliam may complete The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, including the possibility that Johnny Depp and other actors could step in for Heath Ledger. This follows a Jan. 25 report by The Sun (a UK sleaze tabloid) quoting an unnamed studio source stating that Depp might step in. These are only rumors which we are mentioning because they are being actively discussed on film sites and messageboards. Many people think the idea is a good one that would allow the film to be completed.

From IMDB, here is a rave review by Rex Reed who writes for the New York Observer. Excerpts:
Before you get crushed in the avalanche of big, bloated, expensive and over-hyped year-end movies, here's one of the smaller accomplishments that deserves special attention. Man in the Chair, a modest but intelligent feel-good movie with a spectacular performance by Christopher Plummer. .... The actors are all splendid, but it is impossible to describe the full impact of Christopher Plummer's power, summoning decades of experience and craft to turn the role of a barnacled bum into a three-dimensional study of age fueled by despair, rage, and endearment. Working for only a pittance of his usual salary in a film with a $3 million budget raised by the director's sister, a mortgage broker in Idaho, Mr. Plummer gives one of the most colorful and mesmerizing performances of 2007. He is living proof that true artistry has no price tag when you honestly believe in something. Everyone involved should be saluted. At a time when most films wallow in mankind's basest instincts, Man in the Chair is a rare, once in a blue moon kind of movie that celebrates the best qualities in people and makes you applaud the human race.

Emotional Arithmetic
• There is a "trailer" which is just a few short clips and press conference with director Paolo Barzman at the San Sebastion Film Festival site.
Variety review - "Barzman, who previously directed von Sydow in 1994's "Time Is Money," fares better with his actors, particularly Plummer, who brings a rich variety of shadings to what might have been a cookie-cutter gruff patriarch role. ... Pic also benefits from Barzman's strong visual imagination and rewarding collaboration with ace d.p. Luc Montpellier (who shot Sarah Polley's "Away From Her" and Guy Maddin's "The Saddest Music in the World"). Together, they conceive of the pic's flashback scenes as abstract, dreamlike affairs in which the action plays out against enlarged photographic backdrops, while contempo scenes are filmed in breathtaking, color-saturated widescreen."

Closing the Ring will be screened at the BFI London Film Festival Oct. 21 & 22. Early summary reviews are mixed at best. Reelfilm - "And while MacLaine and Plummer are admittedly quite good, there's just no denying that they've been saddled with some seriously melodramatic material." Negative review from Hollywood Reporter.

Emotional Arithmetic - Cineplex review - "A graceful, poetic picture that will most certainly be recognized by the Motion Picture Academy come Oscar time, the strength of 'Emotional Arithmetic' is in its poignant performances from the ensemble cast. As you watch Sarandon, Plummer, Byrne, Dupuis and von Sydow skilfully play off each other, you come to understand that like many classic motion pictures, 'Emotional Arithmetic' could never be replicated because it is a moment in time when the talent, the setting and the story came together perfectly."

Feb. 6, 2006, Variety review excerpts:
Old and new Hollywood meet in writer-director Michael Schroeder's "Man in the Chair," a touching if by-the-numbers tale of an aspiring young filmmaker's encounter with a grumpy fount of movie lore. As a showcase for rising young star Michael Angarano and Christopher Plummer, pic offers the pleasures of connecting Hollywood traditions and generations in the spirit of Peter Bogdanovich's films about and inspired by the movies. Top indie prize at Santa Barbara fest nicely sets up pic for its Berlinale unveiling, with North American and Euro distrib looking assured for this age-crossing drama.

Despite the corniness, Plummer and Angarano are exceptionally well-matched, both drawing upon deep reservoirs of emotion and authentic feeling. With "Snow Angels," "Black Irish" and this one with Plummer, Angarano is on a roll, building yet another memorable portrait of a young American lad in search of himself. Pic marks Plummer's biggest perf since "The Insider," with a portrayal that is never a mere honorific tribute to Hollywood's below-the-line craftsmen, but also a study in loneliness.

Feb. 6, 2006, Hollywood Reporter, The A-list, Ten titles likely to heat up chilly Berlin "Schroeder's "Man," which screens in Berlin's Generation 14plus section, has all the makings of an indie sleeper hit. Christopher Plummer is already generating strong Internet buzz for his performance as a geriatric Hollywood gaffer who gets one last chance to work on a movie set when a teenage film buff asks him for help."

Julie Andrews site news
The Julie Andrews discussion forums have moved to JulieAndrewsOnline.com/forum. There is a Christopher Plummer thread listed under "Friends of Julie," as with the old forums. The old forum, JulieAndrews.org/forum was very active, and the site contained a nice collection of rare vintage video clips. Unfortunately, the site owner disappeared from e-mail contact. The forum moderators decided it best to relocate the forums to a new site. There was concern that the old site would not be renewed and go offline.

Our site, www.Christopher-Plummer.com does not own or moderate any of those sites. We are merely informing readers about the change. Our site sometimes receives requests for a site message board. The reason we do not host one is merely a matter of time constraints of the site owner and webmaster. It takes time to set up boards and moderate them, or even to deal with appointed moderators. Also, this site remains somewhat under construction, with plans in particular to screencap more movies. We'd rather give priority to that project. We don't rule it out for the future, but a message board is not something we have time to implement now. If someone would like to create and host a php style message board, we would be glad to link to it. Otherwise, there are a number of discussion forums already listed on the Links page and we certainly encourage using them.

Don Quixote
Daily Express, A Plummer role for Christopher
Christopher Plummer, 76, best known as Captain Von Trapp in The Sound Of Music, is being lined up to play Don Quixote by maverick director Terry Gilliam in a new big-screen version of the literary classic.

Gilliam, 65, whose attempt to film the 17th-century Spanish novel six years ago was cut short by financial restraints, flooding and illness of his previous star Jean Rochefort, is expected to begin shooting in 2008. It will also feature Pirates Of The Caribbean star Johnny Depp.

"Terry told fans at a screening of his new film Tideland that Plummer was the man he wanted for Quixote, " says an insider. "It's felt that Christopher has the necessary charisma." The news will no doubt disappoint Christopher Lee, who has said it was his ultimate ambition to play Don Quixote.

William Hutt CBC Life and Times doc.
Here's an update on the program. Someone associated with the program wrote to say, "We're making DVD's in the next month or so." He added, "Mr. Plummer was very generous with his time and he offered some great insights for our show." This presumably means an official commercial DVD release. We also heard from some people in Canada who recorded the program, in any event. More info. will be posted on the DVD release when it becomes available.

William Hutt will be featured in a CBC Life and Times special airing in Canada Monday July 10 at 8 p.m. Repeats July 16 and Sept. 10. The documentary includes an interview with Christopher Plummer. Could someone in Canada please record this? If so, please contact me or Glenn or post a note to one of the message boards. Thanks.

Man in the Chair
Great review
from Monsters and Critics:
"This film will be the dark horse of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and with any luck, will be in theaters prior to the 2006 holiday season. ... The performances delivered by Angarano, Plummer and Walsh are deserving of Academy Award nominations. Michael Shroeder is deserving of an Oscar nomination for original screenplay for penning such a funny, beautifully poignant story that will surprise many Hollywood insiders."

According to Variety (Zap2it), Malick is still editing the movie, and the final cut expected to be shorter than what has been shown at early screenings.
From MSNBC: "Several famous actors turn up in roles that turn out to be astonishingly brief: David Thewlis, Wes Studi, Ben Chaplin and Christopher Plummer as Capt. Christopher Newport, who dubs the Indians “The Naturals” before disappearing. Their big scenes may have been left on the cutting-room floor, though the movie already seems overlong at two and a half hours."

Roger Ebert's Top 10 & 20!
[Update: Link at Chicago Sun Times] (OW, scroll) Syriana is Roger Ebert's #2 movie of the year and The New World is in his Top 20! Ebert & Roeper are reviewing The New World on the upcoming weekend show. Syriana received 2 Golden Globe noms today, one for George Clooney in the supporting actor category and another for music score. Christopher Plummer has small roles in both films. He has received excellent notices in some of the Syriana reviews from some important critics. With regard to The New World, he has a small role (3 brief scenes, apparently). This is less than expected, that's for sure, but not surprising, considering the history of Malick's last film, The Thin Red Line. (In that case some big names like Adrien Brody, John Travolta and George Clooney ended up with very little screen time).

The New World
AP on the Best Picture race: Terrence Malick, the reclusive director whose 1998 war saga "The Thin Red Line" was a best-picture nominee, is back with "The New World," a work of high art on the big screen. Malick's portrait of colonial leaders John Smith and John Rolfe and their romances with Indian princess Pocahontas is a hypnotic feast of sight and sound with almost a silent-movie feel, much of the conventional dialogue replaced by poetic voice-overs.
HBO First Look: The New World begins airing Jan. 3.
• There's an excellent video featuring Q'Orianka Kilcher as Pocahontas at the LA Times site.
Dec. 7, THR: Toby Emmerich, the studio's president of production, says he's optimistic that "New World" will compete in the best picture, director and original screenplay categories, and that the cast, including leading man Colin Farrell and supporting players Christian Bale and Christopher Plummer, also could earn nominations. In addition, studio insiders are touting newcomer Q'Orianka Kilcher, who plays Pocahontas, for a best actress mention. "I think this movie will age particularly well, like a certain kind of wine or architecture or painting," Emmerich says.
• Another great review at Nickschager.com "Terrence Malick goes four-for-four with The New World, his latest unqualified masterwork"
Dec. 6, Hollywood Elsewhere: "The trades will be out Friday, 12.16 with their reviews of Terrence Malick's The New World (New Line, 12.25 limited). Most critics will love it, Academy members will run hot, lukewarm and cold, and the paying public....well, who knows? Film sophisticates will turn out, of course...ditto anyone bored with the commercial mainstream output these days...anyone with an appreciation for an unusually told love story...it's a sumptuous art film and a class act all the way."

The New World -
• From Nov. 29, LA Times, Patrick Goldstein ("The blogosphere's incessant handicapping of Oscar favorites is doing the race no favors"): When I went to an early screening of Terrence Malick's "The New World" the other night, my first reaction was one of almost giddy pleasure. It felt too good to be true that this notoriously reclusive artist had delivered a film that is not only a spellbinding portrait of our country's origins, but a singularly personal meditation on romance.

Of course, my next reaction brought me down to earth. What would happen to Malick's film when it was ground through the sausage factory of Oscar blogs and websites that have transformed the Academy Awards from a celebration of movies into a silly exercise in Ouija board-style predictions and lamebrained analysis? In other words, forget about "The New World's" artistry — let's get to the musings you can expect from Oscar pundits: Haven't films set in the 19th century won more best pictures than movies set in the 17th century? What are the movie's chances when no best picture winner over the last 25 years has won without a lead actor in serious contention for an actor prize? And, of course, will the academy punish Malick for refusing to participate in the humiliating spectacle known as Oscar campaigning?

If Nat was an Oscar strategist (Nov. 28, scroll)
• Jeffrey Wells (Hollywood Elsewhere) has seen the movie and talks about it in his Sunday Nov. 27 podcast. (Audio link here.) I don't have time to summarize, but he has major raves. He provides some details and talks about the use of narration/voiceovers, as well as the score. He states that most of the characters speak mainly in voiceovers, except for Christopher Plummer (the only character who speaks in clear complete sentences, as opposed to the voiceovers.) The running time is approximately 2:40. The movie apparently will start screening this week for press and editors. The comments about TNW are in the beginning of the podcast, with some additional brief comments later.

"First and foremost we've created a love story," Green declares. "We're definitely not doing a historical piece. We try to set it properly; we try to give that background and that feeling, but we focus on the love story." It's too early to riff about The New World -- which is in many ways rapturous and magnificent, by the way -- but Green is being truthful only in a partial sense, and in an overall looking-at-the-entire-movie sense her statement is a total crock.

"It's Out of the Park"
The movie has received big raves from most major critics, with a number of reviewers calling it one of the best political thrillers in many years; one of the year's best films, etc. As of this note, the rating is 79 at Metacritic and 80 (94 rating from "cream of the crop" critics) at RT. There are some excellent comments about Christopher Plummer in some of the reviews, including NY Times, though he has a small role among a great ensemble cast. Some reviews were added to the Syriana page. (We presume he has a bigger role in The New World (?), and possibly narration there also (?) one of Malick's trademarks.)

Hollywood Elsewhere 11.23.05: "This is a riveting and deliciously cynical geopolitical drama for the ages. The best people have been speaking about it in reverent tones over the last two or three weeks, and its reputation is only going to grow as the years advance...and for good reason. ... I did a pretty good phone interview with Gaghan last Saturday" [Audio link here] "And read [LAT review] by senior critic Kenneth Turan. I totally agree with everything he says."

Oscarwatch 11.23.05 Syriana - It's Out of the Park: "a film most people didn't see coming ... [quotes LAT and NYT raves] ... All that is waiting for Syriana is the public's perception. But if it does what it might do, how exciting that a film should come along, essentially out of nowhere, to make a serious impact on the Oscar race. But then there is the inevitable question, will it be over their heads?"

Nov. 10, Hollywood Elsewhere "All the big year-end films but three are either currently screening or will start to screen in a week or so. Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, The White Countess, Casanova, The Producers (starting on or about 11.18), Syriana, Memoirs of a Geisha, Narnia, Match Point, et. al. The last to be considered will be Terrence Malick's The New World (there's an Academy screening set for 11.26), Peter Jackson's King Kong and Steven Spielberg's Munich (both in very early December). It's flurry time, screening-conflict time, dog-and-pony-show time."
