CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER plays the controversial Boston
Cardinal Bernard Law, who was at the center of the scandal.
“Christopher Plummer was the beginning, the middle, and the end
of who we wanted to play Cardinal Law,” noted Kennedy. “He has
been incredible. There was no other choice. Law is a tragic and
flawed character of Shakespearian proportion.”
pg. 11
“Villains are wonderful to play, and there is always something
about a villain that has a good side, somewhere hidden,” offered
Plummer. “There has got to be something worthy behind the mask
of villainy, and that’s what you look for in a role. He probably
thought he was doing absolutely the right thing. Whether he did or
not, it doesn’t matter because I must play him as if he did.
Whether he was cowardly about it or not, he swept it under the
rug, with the idea of ‘saving the church.’ Protecting the crime was
a terrible misjudgment.”

A few weeks prior to the start of principal photography on OUR
FATHERS in June 2004, it was announced that Pope John Paul II
appointed Cardinal Bernard F. Law to a ceremonial job overseeing
one of the four major basilicas of Rome, St. Mary Major, granting
the former archbishop of Boston a prestigious appointment one
week before the Archdiocese of Boston announced that it was
closing 65 parishes. The appointment infuriated critics who
blamed Law for the clergy sexual abuse scandal.
